Sauk Centre Post Office
The Post Office Mural is located inside the lobby of the Post Office building.
This was a WPA project painted by Richard Jansen. The government wanted murals in public buildings as part of their WPA projects and to help artists get back on their feet. Jansen painted this oil on canvas mural in 1942, entitled “Threshing Wheat.”
Painted in 1942
Jansen went to the towns in which he was to paint and asked the townspeople what they would like. There was some discussion on if the mural should depict dairy farms or field farming. The Postmaster at the time was the final decision maker, choosing a farm scene with a threshing crew. Sauk Centre is one of 26 post offices that still have the original murals.
